IPSec delivers secure VPN transmitting. The most common channel for secure traffic over the internet is naturally VPN. To make the vpn secure in the meaning of the information being unaltered, it is vital to use the TCP/IP protocol. In order to make the information secure there is a need for encryption. The standard encryption today is IPSec. It stands for ip security. There are two different IPSec protocols that can be used in two different states.

VPN (as mentioned before) means virtual private network. VPN is a technique for segregating traffic from specific locations in an specific net. If we are talking IP´s then the vpn generally is encrypted and is implemented thru IPsec. It is also possible to create un-encrypted nets over VPN via MPLS protocol to differentiate different nets.
Ipsec is in the way to on an secure level reach an isolated encrypted network. The level is 3 in the OSI referrers-model.

VPN creates the possibility for secure transmissions over the internet or intranet. Vpn therefore makes it possible to transmit secure over the inherently unsecured internet environment. Or between other insecure places such as en internal office network.
Vpn can connect two peer places such as remote offices, people working from home, or similar. The connection to the internal network can thereby be totally secured.
Vpn can be transmitted via TCP/IP layer or the UDP layer. Nodes of virtual groups may be allocated to several layers, for instance In VLAN the it is sustained by switches on LAN-level.
The VPN session is administrated by the firewall, that is taking care of several different tasks in the session.
In the connection process the software asking for the secure session calls the firewall and request a channel for the network. The firewall then identifies the identity of the calling node. After identifying the node the identity is checked against a database, one popular base is the LDAP. If the node checks as valid the firewall creates a session and an encrypted key is exchanged.

When VPN goes down you might get the “Secure VPN connection terminated locally by the client”. The reason is probably the 412 reason witch is that the remote peer is no longer responding. This may occure if the ATT was disconnected or the dual connection was unexpectedly disconnected.
I recommend to check so that the VPN software is installed with the card present.

Do you get this (412) error when trying to connect to the the VPN?. Make sure the vpn is on and the firewall is turned off. See to it that Windows XP SP2 Firewall is not blocking the VPN specific traffic. That the hardware network cards, routers, modems etc are working properly. Allso check so you dont have considerable packet loss. As i said before it primarily means that the remote VPN peer is no longer responding. One other solution may bee to try and idle the VPN connection for awile.
Later you can use the cmu vpn tcp connection (configured for IPSec over TCP) to fix the problem.

Error 412 means the pear is not responding. this error message targets the Cisco VPN client-side software. The error message is “Error Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding”. There may bee several reasons for this. There might be a firewall blocking the vpn traffic. There might be som sort of hjardware malfunction, or just general loss of package. If it is the firewall blocking traffic, it has to bee in step6. One way to get rid of the problem might br to config cmu_vpn_tcp connection to IPSEC ocer TCP.

Apple OSX uses PPTP, the same as for instance MPPE in Linux 2.6.15. PPTP is a free linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD client for the Microsoft Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol. PPTP Client is a GNU General Public License (GPL) product off cource.
You can stay connected via DSL or Cable modem. If you want protection VPN is the ticket, as usual. The VPN requires some additional software and configurations on the mac. The Tiger is however more or less reaady “out of the box”… It supports VPN on demand and has a built-in VPN client supporting Layer 2 protocol over L2TP/IPSec and Point-to-point tunneling.
For further info regarding this, take a bite of the apple.
